Eun-Ye Cheong

University of the Philippines

It is also aimed to compare and contrast the cross-cultural variations of the discourse structure of a sermon delivered by Korean, Filipino and American pastors. More specifically, the objectives of this study are (1) to show the basic generic structure of sermons delivered by Korean, Filipino and American pastors; (2) to compare the general discourse structure of sermons of the three groups of pastors; (3) to discover the regular occurrences of rhetorical functions and markers to achieve moves in each stage; (4) to compare the use of rhetorical functions and markers of three groups of pastors having different cultural background; (5) to discover the most common markers realizing the rhetoncal functions.
